Cultural Update - December 2011

Dec. 21/11

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

On behalf of my family, I wish all a joyous holiday with family and friends.  Holidays are about creating memories and also reminiscing years gone by.  Reflecting back I think about when I was a young mother, baking, shopping for those special toys for our children. The season is also a time of celebration, and planning for the New Year.  For many it’s also about survival, so with this I wish to say to everyone needing some support or direction please do reach out to the one you feel comfortable in connecting with.

Elders’ report

I have been very busy in looking into starting up a Sunday Service, hopefully this will begin in the New Year.

Interesting news! Beginning in the New Year, I will be meeting with a Veteran rep to begin dialogue on seeking funding to build our own cenotaph here is our community.  To be successful in achieving this will bring recognition to our community.

Language Program: A successful grant has been achieved through Anglican Church of Canada. Recognition for this successful grant is owed to Joan Brown.  The title of project “tiwi’ulh” (to pray) Community will be guided on singing prayer songs in Hulquminum and actual prayer booklets will be produced.

We are seeking members to be part of a team and open to anyone willing to participate.  The team formed will meet once month to plan fundraising, home visits with Elders’ & collect their concerns. If there are any concerns we will re-direct these to the right person within SFN administration to ensure that they are being dealt with.  Meetings will be scheduled for evening sessions or as deemed necessary; notification of the date and time will be posted.  Please contact me at 250-740-2333, I am anxious to get this started.
